How to Use Midjourney Guide: Midjourney Aspect Ratio Parameter
If you want to make your images taller, wider, or just a different shape, you’ll want to use --ar (aspect ratio) parameter.
What Is Aspect Ratio?
Aspect ratio is basically how wide an image is compared to how tall it is. When you see something like “4:3,” it means the image’s width is 4 parts while its height is 3 parts. A classic example is your TV screen at 16:9, meaning 16 parts wide and 9 parts tall.
Some commonly used aspect ratios:
- 1:1 (default) - Instagram feed posts, some Facebook and Twitter images.
- 9:16 - TikTok videos, Snapchat, and YouTube Shorts.
- 16:9 - YouTube standard, HDTV, most landscape videos.
- 2:1 - Some smartphone screens.
- 21:9 - Cinematic widescreen.
- 4:5 - Instagram vertical posts (portrait format).
How to Use the Midjourney --ar Parameter
When you type your prompt, just add --ar (or --aspect) plus the ratio you want at the end (two whole numbers separeted by colon).
Examples
- a yellow bicycle --ar 4:5
- a yellow bicycle --ar 2:3
- a yellow bicycle (we don´t need to specify --ar 1:1 because it is default)
- a yellow bicycle --ar 16:9

Why Use Different Aspect Ratios?
- Composition: A wide shot (like 16:9) can capture more background, while a tall shot (like 9:16) focuses attention on vertical elements.
- Creative Style: Square images are neat and balanced, while super wide images can feel cinematic or dramatic.
- Platform Requirements: Some social media sites or printing services have preferred aspect ratios.
