How to Use Midjourney Guide: Midjourney Quality Parameter
Ever wonder how to control the level of detail Midjourney puts into your images? That’s where the Midjourney --q (or --quality) parameter comes in.
What Does --q Do?
Lower --q:
- Generates images faster
- Uses less GPU time
- Produces images with fewer details (handy for quick idea testing)
Higher --q:
- Takes longer to generate
- Consumes more GPU time
- Can enhance textures and detail, but might reduce how coherent the final result looks
Important Things to Know
- Resolution isn’t affected
- No guarantee of “better”: Higher quality settings aren’t automatically “better.”
- Default is 1: If you don’t specify a --q value, Midjourney uses 1 by default.
- Initial generations only: The quality setting only applies to your first pass. Variations and upscales aren’t affected by the --q parameter.

When you type your prompt, just add --q (or --quality) plus number you want. You can choose between 0.5, 1 or 2.
